]]> Fri Mar 12 2004 The Fairford Branch (or some of whats left of it) http://david-howse.fotopic.net/c1009723.html The Fairford Branch was built and opened in 2 stages, by 2 companies, the Yarnton junction to Witney section of 8 miles 220 yards in length construction of which started on 19th May 1860 , and opened 13th November 1861 . On the 14th January 1873 , a 14 mile 220 yard extension from a junction just short of Witney's station to Fairford in Gloucestershire was opened, this gave the line a total length of 21¾ miles, the extension was part of a proposed line from Yarnton thorough to Cheltenham & Swindon, but the route beyond Fairford was never finished. To facilitate the extension with the East Gloucestershire Railway Co., Witney's old passenger station was turned in to Witney's goods station and a new joint passenger station was built. The line when fully opened had 8 stations: · Yarnton (junction with the Oxford Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway) · Eynsham · South Leigh · Witney · Bampton (Later know as Bampton (Oxon) on the 2nd July 1906 and Brize Norton & Bampton (Oxon) 1st May 1940) · Alvescot · Lechlade · Fairford During the railways life 3 more stations where added: · Cassington (Halt opened by the Great Western Railway in 1936 between Yarnton and Eynsham) · Carterton (Station opened in 1944 between Bampton & Alvescot) · Kelmscott & Langford (Station opened in 1907 between Alvescot and Lechlade) On the 1st July 1890 the Great Western Railway Company bought out the shareholders of the two railway companies. The railway passed on to British Railway hands along with the rest of the British railway network on 1st January 1948 . The railway was closed in two sections the first the East Gloucester section on the 18th June 1962 , and the track removed by railway. And the Witney section was closed on the 2nd November 1970 . A 6 wheeled large diesel locomotive built using a Knighwing small diesel locomotive kit, “kit bashed” onto a Graham Farish General Purpose tank chassis. (Got the idea from an article published in January 2000 “009 News”) A picture showing the whole layout. An unknown, John Fowler and sons Traction Engine. The name on the side says “T. T. Boughton”.

The Back end of Class 142 DMU number 142026 just leaving Teignmouth and heading east along the seawall sometime in the 1980’s. An intercity 125 Class 43, 253004 approaching Teignmouth in Devon along the sea wall, sometime in the late 1980’s, with a west bound train. An Intercity 125 Class 43, 253006 leaving Teignmouth station in Devon and about to run along the sea wall. Sometime in the late 1980’s, with an east bound train. A rare picture of an unknown Class 33 working a freight in Devon sometime in the 1980’s. The wagons contain china clay slurry and are obviously being tripped to Riverside Yard, Exeter, probably either from Burngullow, Drinnick Mill or Parkandillack. They would later be attached to a Speedlink train which would take them to Stoke-on-Trent for the potteries. (Thanks Martin) An Intercity livered “125” 43051 The Duke and Duchess of York at Goodrington siding sometime in the late 1980’s An unknown Class 50 leaving Parsons Tunnel heading toward Teignmouth along the sea wall sometime in the 1980’s An Intercity 125 class 43, 43941 and Network Southeast, class 50, 50026 “Indomitable” (now preserved) awaiting the holiday makers of Torbay at Goodrington near Paignton, early on a September Saturday morning, in either 1987 or 1988. – The line to the extreme left is the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam railway. A Class 50 50010 Monarch approaching Teignmouth along the sea wall sometime in the 1980’s. On the head code panel the locomotive original number of D410 can be seen, this locomotive was scraped in 1992.

A 0-4-0WT “Berlin” being cosmetically restored at a workshop near Witney, Oxfordshire. This locomotive was originally at Penlee quarry, Newlyn, Cornwall, and possibly called “Penryn” it was then renamed “Berlin” by its new owners and is now on static display at the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway. Its odd but when I first saw this engine I for some reason believed it was an Orenstein and Koppel built locomotive, but it is listed as being built by Freudenstein. A Hunslet Engine Co. 0-4-0ST of 1898, “Covercoat” at the 2' gauge Launceston Steam Railway, Cornwall Elf, a 2’ gauge, 0-6-0WT built by Orenstein and Koppel in 1936 (Works No.12740) at Pages Park on the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway. 2’ gauge 0-4-0ST 'Quarry Hunslet'. “Lilian”, built by the Hunslet Engineering Company of Leeds in 1883 as No. 317, spent most of her life at Port Penrhyn and seen here on the Launceston Steam Railway, Cornwall. A Hunslet 4WDH preparing to leave the (other) Toddington station on the North Gloucestershire Railway Company Ltd. It was built to be run with just one locomotive and 4 skip wagons, 2 empty and 2 full, I have since discovered that it can be run with 2 locomotives to make thing a little more interesting. Operation is very limited 2 full wagons are pulled in to the loop, the 2 empty ones are collected from the boiler house and the two full ones are pushed into the boiler house to replace them. The layout dimensions are 1 meter long by 40 cm wide, the minimum radius curve is 12 cm. Brunel's Culham station, Oxfordshire. 2nd March 2003 An EX City Of Oxford AEC Regent III bus built in 1950, fleet Number L166, part of the Oxford Bus Museum Collection at Long Hanborough. Taken in the approach to Long Hanborough Railway station on 4th September 2005 Paisley District Tramways No.68. Built in 1919, enclosed by Glasgow Corporation. And is part of the National Tramway Museums collection at Crich in Derbyshire. Oporto No.9 is a tram trailer car from Portugal it has been hauled by three different forms of traction: mules, steam and electric, and is part of the National Tramway Museums collection at Crich in Derbyshire. The Bridge over the Abingdon end of the now closed Wiltshire & Berkshire Canal. This bridge is at the junction between the canal and the river Thames. 3rd September 2006.
